Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Alex Wells (he/they) is a CANFAR CTN+ Postdoctoral Fellow in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Manitoba. Before joining Village Lab, Alex completed their PhD in the interdisciplinary Social Dimensions of Health program at the University of Victoria and completed degrees in social work at the University of Toronto and York University. They have over 10 years of experience working in health care, social service, 2SLGBTQ and sexual health organizations.

Alex’ research uses a transformative emancipation approach to conduct mixed-methods research that supports the health and wellbeing of 2SLGBTQ people, people living with HIV and socially marginalized communities. Alex’s PhD dissertation, 2SLGBTQ Recreational Sport Participation: Mental Health, Social Support and Community Connection, explored the impact of 2SLGBTQ recreational sports on the health and wellbeing of 2SLGBTQ across Canada. Alex is currently building on this work as Co-PI of the 2SLGBTQ+ Recreational Sport Study, a survey of 2SLGBTQ recreational sports participants launching in the Fall of 2025, and through their postdoctoral work understanding how 2SLGBTQ recreational sports may support the health of people living with HIV and HIV prevention efforts.
